"Invest in innovation now, tomorrows prosperity will rely on it." - Steve Wakefield

It doesn't take much to be an Open Innovation Leader - report, Tom Hochstatter
Links to a good report: ATKearney Innovation Leadership Report.  This report is really worth a read.  The report is a 16 page pdf, which does a good job discussing the characteristics of innovation leaders.  The innovation process discussed contains the following 5 areas:

  1. Innovation strategy
  2. Idea generation
  3. Idea screening
  4. Concept development
  5. Commercialization

Leadership and innovation, The McKinsey Quarterly
To read this one, you will need to register first (it is free).  This a pretty long one, but worth a read.  A good quote from the article:

... A first step is to formally integrate innovation into the strategic-management agenda of senior leaders to an extent that few companies have done so far. In this way, innovation can be not only encouraged but also managed, tracked, and measured as a core element in a company’s growth aspirations. Second, executives can make better use of existing (and often untapped) talent for innovation, without implementing disruptive change programs, by creating the conditions that allow dynamic innovation networks to emerge and flourish. Finally, they can take explicit steps to foster an innovation culture based on trust among employees. In such a culture, people understand that their ideas are valued, trust that it is safe to express those ideas, and oversee risk collectively, together with their managers. Such an environment can be more effective than monetary incentives in sustaining innovation.

Some things senior executives can do to help innovation:

  1. Define the kind of innovation that drives growth and helps meet strategic objectives
  2. Add innovation to the formal agenda at regular leadership meetings
  3. Set performance metrics and targets for innovation

10 Clusters of Innovation in New England, Scott Kirsner
A short blog entry about an article on the Boston.com site (and the Boston Globe), about the 'clusters of innovation' in the New England area.  Interesting there isn't any financial services related innovation on that list.

What is your Innovation Quotient? Take this TEST, Navneet
Interesting set of questions, which made me rethink how 'habit oriented' I am currently.
