Interesting Finds: August 18, 2008 - [Final Cut]

by Jason Haley 17. August 2008 23:18

So far the comments on the Rough Cut vs. Final Cut are mixed ... seems to almost be equal ... which do you like better?

Other stuff

Neno Loje - [Remote Desktop] Quickly copying files when using Remote Desktop - nice tip on copying files from a remote machine to your local machine (and vice-versa?)  Currently the link to the TechNet article is broke.

Davy Brion - Why you should always unscubscribe event handlers - Davy walks through some code showing some of the ins and outs of unsubscribing vs. not.  I've run into these problems in WinForms more often than Asp.Net ... usually happens when I want to recycle a form and not recreate it every time.

Mike Gunderloy - Dell Gets Closer to my Dream Machine - Mike points describes what "Latitude ON" means for the new Dell E4300 (apparently it contains 2 machines: 1 windows and 1 lighter Linux machine).

JD Meier - Software Methodologies at a Glance - J.D. points to some good methodology links (XP, MSF Agile, RUP and MSF).  The links point at pages that sum up what those methodologies consist of ... nice!

Web stuff

Tim Huffam - VS2008 Javascript debugging error: The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document - nice reminder of what it takes to get a breakpoint to break with javascript in VS.  A short cut for the "Attach to Process..." is Ctrl+Alt+P ... for some reason that menu item is missing on some installs (you can add it through menu customization though).

Dion Almaer - Getting a JavaScript stracktrace in any browser and A simple solution to the “other” problem with select boxes and Nice new Dojo aggregate effects - First link looks to be a great script to get a stack trace in javascript (instead of using firebug), the second link looks interesting if you use jQuery and the other link has some interesting fade animations (though I couldn't get it to work in IE ... worked in Firefox fine though).

Database stuff

Joe Chang - Large Query Performance from SQL Server 2000 to 2008, 32 & 64-bit - summary entry of some performance testing Joe did for Sql Server 2000, 2005 and 2008.

Kimberly Tripp - TechEd has completed! - this entry is mostly a summary of TechEd, but she mentions a fix for a Performance Dashboard bug which you might be interested in.

Greg Low - Database mirroring requires transaction log backup regardless - Greg mentions that is seems you need to now backup the transaction log for mirroring too? (though he doesn't mention what db version)

Marco Russo - Get SQL Server allocation info inside SSMS - points to a new CodePlex project called Allocation SQL Server Management Studio Add-in ... looks like it provides some good information.

PowerShell stuff
Roberto Farah - [PowerShell Script] PowerDbg v4.0 - Using PowerShell to Control WinDbg - Roberto gives a summary of the new features in the latest PowerDbg version.

Security stuff

Darknet - New MySpace and Facebook Worm Target Social Networks - Darknet discusses a new worm going through the social networks via email and instant messaging.

Schneier - Air Force Suspends Cyber-Command - links to an article titled "Air Force Suspends Controversial Cyber Command" on Wired's blog network.

SOA stuff
Dave Winer - Dare left something out (and it's important) - points out something that is often overlooked (XML-RPC) in comparisons between SOAP and REST.

Business stuff
Tim Stall - Does your team culture encourage learning? - Tim lists some important ways learning can be encouraged ... of course it is still up to the individual to want to learn and do what it takes to learn something new.

Career stuff

Darren Rowse - Intellectual Property Law Tips for Bloggers - long post and I haven't read it all yet, but it seems to be a good description of things to take into account in order to protect your brand and content.

Ben Casnocha - Email Dialogue on Business Books, Self-Education, and Mental Models - links to what looks to be a promising site "Personal MBA Recommended Reading List"

Alvin Ashcraft - Dew Drop - August 17, 2008
