Interesting Finds: Week after Thanksgiving 4

by Jason Haley 1. December 2006 02:43

I had to stand up on the bus most of the way home to today so I'm going to have to get me an mp3 player (yea I know I'm a little late) - so I'll probably start linking to more pod cast type stuff.

The power in my apartment building went out half way through my reading … so there aren't too many comments tonight.

Commute stuff
+Microsoft Downloads - .NET Rocks! - Bill Wagner and Diane Marsh on Non-Microsoft Technology

Building stuff
+Brennan - 7 Steps to MSBuild … this is a link to all 7 of his postings - last night I only linked to 4 of them. I always find building stuff interesting because it is part of the trinity from practical programming - source control, unit testing and automation.

Database stuff
+Siva Pinnaka - Application to migrate data between different environments using the ADO.NET 2.0 SqlBulkCopy … I'm sure the first thing you are thinking is 'why not just use ssis? Or dts?' - or at least that is the first thing I thought. Neat little application though … and it is always nice to have options.

Blogging stuff
+Peter A Bromberg - BASICS: ObjectDataSource Control … another article to get the thoughts going about designing my next blog …

Career stuff
+Matt Goyer - Big companies vs Startups … nice write up on the differences of working at a startup in the Seattle area vs. a large software company.
+Dave Lorenzo - Can You Start a Successful Business with $1500? … my first thought was NO - then I read the guy was already a full time student (ie not opportunity cost being lost) … add that to the list of things I should have done in college …

Other stuff
+Anatoly Lubarsky - Enterprise Library sucks big time … I haven't used the Enterprise Library, so I can't argue with any of his points but he makes it sound like a swiss army knife when all you need is a tooth pick. Anyone know what has been used more - the application blocks or the enterprise library?
+via Dzone - Sinclair Schuller - How to Rewrite Standard Recursion through a State Stack & Interation … good reading for a Friday
+Tim Stall - Ildasm: Viewing attributes … Reflector is a little easier to determine the value of the actual attribute :)
+Jean-Paul Boodhoo - Nothin But .Net - A .Net Developer Bootcamp

Security stuff
+Greg - Insecure.org Top 100 Network Security Tools for 2006

Debugging stuff
+Thomas Ptacek - Rafal Wojtczuk’s User-Mode Single Stepping: 100x Faster Than Debuggers
