by

What's up with the ftp client experience in Internet Explorer 7? What use to be a nice smooth transition to a windows explorer ftp client is now a pain in the butt ... what the heck is this all about?

Yeah, the whole "Page|Open FTP in Explorer" thing is really annoying ... and doesn't always work in IE7 beta 3, even with sites that worked in IE7 beta 2.

I'l looking for some help here. We have an application that generates html pages containing ftp links in the form
ftp://userid:password@ipname/directoryname
These links don't work when the page is viewed using IE 7, because it removes the 'userid:password@' somewhere along the way. Is this a known IE 7 issue? Is there a setting or technique I can use to work around the problem?

I had the problem of my network folders disappearing from windows explorer after installing a beta version of ie7 (2 i think), and could not access my ftp sites. The solution, in the end was to uninstall ie7, then re-install ie6, after which the folders reappeared. then installing the final version of ie7 leaves the ftp folders intact.

I would like to know why ftp in ie7 does not remember username or password like ie6. Also why is there no option to save login details?

For FTP, instead of clicking on the "e", like you're use to, right click on the windows start menu instead, and click "explore". Then type in the
ftp://ftp.site.com
. Don't forget the ftp://. An even better option might be:
sourceforge.net/.../showfiles.php?group_id=21558
" rel="nofollow">sourceforge.net/.../showfiles.php?group_id=21558">
sourceforge.net/.../showfiles.php?group_id=21558

Dear all,
IE 7 may or may not work with FTP, but your explorer does. On Explorer address bar, type the FTP address, and it works just as previous (remembers user name/password, as well as folders).
You are making a big deal out of nothing. :-|

EVEN BETTER: make a shortcut to explorer.exe and append your ftp url as a command line argument in the "Target" text box. this makes it work as before. (only defect is that dragging url from IE's address bar does not create this kind of shortcut automatically.)

Thanks Michael -
Very frustrating that you can't open FTP sites on IE7, and I would have never thought of opening Explorer to open the site.

It seems that IE 7 ignores the security that I've setup for FTP users. Now users can see everyones folders whereas in the past, it was setup so they only could see their specific folder. Does anyone no about this or have some suggestions?
Thanks.

Having suffered through the same IE 7 / "remember password" issue, I found this site very helpful. What ended up working for me is creating an WINDOWS Explorer Icon (not IE) on my desktop and apending the target to my FTP site.

My issue with this whole FTP issue is, IE7 tends to display FTP sites (Serv-U) in plain text format, only allowing a single file download at a time. Anyone else have the same problem...?

me too, no way to force IE7 (German) to work as it was with IE6. Only using commandline interface I was able to send files over ftp. By now, couldn´t find any MS-KB about that curious behavior...:-(
But thank you for your helpful suggestions.

Hi, you geniuses have probably already tried this but for anyone as unexperienced as me...
Open 'Internet Options' in 'Tools'
Go to the 'Advanced' tab
In the 'Settings' field make sure this 'Browsing' option is enabled : 'Enable FTP Folder View (outside of Internet Explorer)'.
Worked for me (so far so good) and i hope it works for u too. Let me know...

I had to open IE7, click Tools, Internet Options, Advanced.
Then check: Enable view of FTP (outside Internet Explorer)
Then uncheck: Use Passive FTP ( for firewall and DSL compatibility). I then could get the FTP site in Windows Explorer. Only Text format in IE7.

1) IE7 does not allow a drag-and-drop 'folder' view of FTP like previous versions did.
2) IE7 does not display the correct files in the users FTP folder. It actually displays the site's root directory - from which you can't navigate anywhere.
Partial Solution: Use FIREFOX or NETSCAPE. You can't upload files, and can't get a 'folder' view, but at least they allow you to download the right files.

I think the 'username:password@' functionality was removed from IE for security reasons. It could be used to easily mask what site you were really on, for example:
www.barclays.co.uk
" rel="nofollow">http://
www.barclays.co.uk
" rel="nofollow">
www.barclays.co.uk
" rel="nofollow">http://
www.barclays.co.uk
:website@3232235521">
www.barclays.co.uk
" rel="nofollow">http://
www.barclays.co.uk
" rel="nofollow">
www.barclays.co.uk
" rel="nofollow">http://
www.barclays.co.uk
:website@3232235521
If you clicked on a link like this in, for example, a phishing e-mail you wouldn't really be looking at
www.barclays.co.uk
because the browser would treat that as the username. The site you would be viewing would be 3232235521, which is a decimal IP address and works in the same way as a normal IP. In this example this is the decimal IP for 192.168.0.1.

Change the way you open URL:FTP types.
Windows Explorer
Tools
Folder Options
File Types
URL:File Transfer Protocol
Advanced
Edit
Browse
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
Clear the fields "Application:" and "Topic:"
Uncheck "Use DDE", these will auto populate after closing.
These fields can all be found and edited in the registry too. If you play with it, you can get FTP links (with username and password embedded) to open in two apps... just not IE7.
Or just use firefox...

There are plenty of ways for users like us who know how to get around this to get by. My issue is that I have an area of my site where contractors log-in to FTP via their internet browser to upload content back to the server.
I can't exactly expect all these people to jump through all these hoops to set-up their browsers to be able to do this... Both Firefox and IE7 display FTP folders as tree/text links by default.
This is stupid and just one more example that Microsoft DOES NOT GET IT! Why not have the browser ask the server how it would like to be displayed? Simple solution tailored to each sites' design.

Thank's a lot Jin Tao...
Only you solve my problem...
It's crazy we can only use your solution, if somebody would use drag and drog with Windows Explorer, we have to use a shortcut (amazing)... or use IE6.
Jin you are the best.

Yeah, I have the same issues with IE7 where my links with embedded passwords to FTP folders do not work when I send them to subcontractors. Using Explorer is a good work-around but it is frustrating that IE7 won't even do what the stuff that comes for free with your computer will do! The forced upgrade to IE7 runs automatically as a priority and is hard to disable without a patch. I feel like it is more of an involuntary forced downgrade.

Windows Explorer does solve the problem, sort of. This works only if you copy a link - "
ftp://username:userpassword@??????"
into Windows Explorer. If you send an email with the link to someone they will instinctively click the link, which opens Internet Explorer, which will not work. Microsoft says they have done this for security reasons. To me, it's just extra work for me and my tech department. We have explained this process to our users and subcontractors many times, but because it is counter intuitive they just don't get it.

Jonathan:
Thanks for this tip. I am trying to set this up for my dad so he doesn't have to type any ftp addresses to get to a server we use to share photos. I just don't know how to append my ftp url as a command line argument in the "target" box. Everything I have tried comes up as an error. Right now it reads C:\Windows\explorer.exe in the Target box.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

I havent read through all of these, but this is what worked for me:
1. Create a shortcut for windows explorer
2. Right click on this icon and choose properties
3. In the target text box enter %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, and then your site
for example %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,
ftp://12.26.565.62
4. Rename the icon whatever you want.
Hope this helps
