Productivity Working with 2 Monitors > Productivity working with 1 monitor

I have read several blogs in the past talking about how 2 monitors make you more productive, but ... I didn't have 2 monitors - so I always would think -> “one of these days”.  Well at my new job, all developers have 2 monitors setup on their desks!  It took me a couple of days to start to use the extended desktop more efficiently, but let me tell you ... it makes things so much faster!

What do I mean by faster?  Think of this scenario: You are working on a block of code and come across something you want to bring the MSDN documentation up and look at an example:

1 Monitor -> you alt-tab from one program to another
2 Monitors -> you bring the MSDN documentation up on the other monitor.  This allows you to look at the example and your code at the same time!

Think of how many situations you have the same problem - flipping between two programs - back and forth - back and forth.  Now it is just a glance, not an alt-tab.

I know what you are thinking ... “no kidding Jason, of course you can”.   To me this wasn't obvious until this week.  This morning I set up my monitor (of my desktop that I hardly ever use) as an extended desktop for my laptop...makes reading my blogs in rssbandit - and opening links in IE easier too!

Now I'm thinking of “Swordfish” - 7 monitors!!!

Two monitors is the only way to go. I had two monitors for a while, then my PC was replaced. It took the PC guys about a month to set my new PC up with the dual video. I was amazed how hard it was to have only one monitor, and when I got back to two monitors - I couldn't believe how effecient I became. Now, the question becomes, is it a measurable productivity enhancement, or just a placebo type enhancement.

Jeff: I was thinking about that myself. How would you measure the productivity gain? I only really got to the obvious stuff like below before I decided that I really don't care how you would measure it - it is just better!

Timings:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Working with 2 applications open at one time:

+Using Alt-tab to switch - the more programs you have open the more time it takes, but still the max would probably be something like 2 sec.
+Using multiple screens - 0 sec.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Copy and pasting from one application to another: (about same timings as above)

+Using Alt-tab to switch - requires a copy and paste (usually) and a switch
+Using mutliple screens - don't always have to copy and paste and can drag from one screen to another
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel like more is gained than these timings show, but I'm not sure how to quantify it...

For measurements of productivity gain, see my post here:
