Today I am in a TestDirector training class. My goal is to learn how to use it to fill out my time sheet (which is web based) for me. Seems to be a good product. It will be interesting to so how the tool is adopted in my department.
Test case? What is that? Requirements that aren’t ambiguous and can be tested….well that is rare.
As a developer, I would love to see this tool adopted and really pushed to be used but historically “they” (read some unknown manager … ie. No owner of the intuitive – or worse they make someone own it and don’t give them any authority to enforce using the tool) sets up training, gives us the product and leaves it to the individuals to use it. This has about a 2-10% sticking ratio (my measurements).
IT training is an interesting subject. When do you train? After several years in IT shops, I now seem to think that JIT training works best. If you bring someone in to train the whole group, but only 3 people use it within a reasonable time – it wastes both training $ and time of the people who aren’t going to use the technology any time soon. If you just train the people who are going to use it, you don’t waste your money or the time of the people who won’t use it any time soon BUT you might tick some people off due to feeling “left out”.
Back to the class to do some test cases…
What do you think is the best way to train IT departments?
