Cheap Web Hosting

I am re-posting the following, which was posted by Johan Glozman on my interior site back in November. I needed the reminder and thought others might benefit too.

Many of us wish we had our own website, but it's always been to expensive to be worth it. Turns out, it's not so! If you want, you can have your own site with your own domain for ~$20 PER YEAR. Yes, that's TWENTY DOLLARS PER YEAR. Two martinis at a Boston club is $20. A meal at Zygomates is more than $20. But you can have a site for just that much.

Step 1: Get a domain name.

There are a few good sites. I like http://www.domain-name-center.com, where you can find the cheap domain providers. There are places that will charge you just $8/year. Whomever you go with, don't purchase anything extra from them, like hosting or emails. This service is just to register the name and forward the nameservers to your hosting provider.

Step 2: Get Hosting.

Here there are a lot of variables. Do you need a lot of space? Do you need unlimited email addresses? Do you need Windows? .NET? Go to http://www.findmyhosting.com to find the site that works best for you. I chose CheapWebHost because they have Windows hosting for just ONE DOLLAR/month. That's $12/year. Used to be hosting was $30/month; now it's $12 PER YEAR. They also have lots of nifty features that provide me with whatever I need. Other providers give you more space or different features, but you can find ultracheap hosting that fits what you need out there.

Just one caveat: ".NET Support" is not always complete ".NET Support", so be careful. While MaximumASP.com offers very good .NET support with SQL Server for $150/month, the $1/month places are not nearly as good. With CheapWebHost, I've had to go back and forth with their overworked tech support trying to get basic things like data connectivity to work. Other people I know had the same problem even with $10/month service.

So basically, if all you want is some hosting and email for your domain, do the $1/month, but if you are running something that HAS to be online reliably and/or do complex things, you'll have to pay more.

I agree with Johan i had a php host for about $2/month and it was crappy as H*ll if you pay more you most of the time get better stuff and support.

WebHost4Life.com has full ASP.NET support, with MS SQL (as well as MySql), for $10/month. It also includes unlimited sub-domains and domains (small one-time setup for domains with email -- I think $15), which makes it pay for itself over $1-$2, even $5, plans when you have multiple domains. They also know what they're doing. Yes, if you use Wilson as your referral I can get a small commission, but I stick with them because they keep my stuff up very well.
